The New York Times article discusses the controversial use of a gay actor in a movie about missionaries.
A few evangelicals lambasted the filmmakers for using actor Chad Allen in End of the Spear, a true account about missionaries to Ecuador, a missionary's family, and their encounter with the Waodani. Although few evangelists are upset about the choice of actors in various movies, it would not solely prevent me from seeing any movie.
I do appreciate hearing about what the church has to say about the issues. I would like to hear what are the objections. That helps me know what to consider and decide. Ultimately, from there, it's the content and the message that I want to see, and it usually overrides any other considerations. Local churches, as well as at my church, have recommended their congregations to see this movie about its message and the running themes of forgiveness and redemption.
I can't wait to see it.
As for other movies, I have decided not to see Brokeback Mountain. I was curious to see it, but I have heard from both sides about the movie and read the synopsis and reviews. I'm pretty certain that the movie is quite good. There has been so much media hype and news of numerous Oscar nominations.
After hearing him talk about the movie, T. helped me to decide that I didn't want to see it.
Last weekend, I listened to an older gentleman who lived that type of experience during the 1970s and 1980s, and he watched the movie. I could hear the deep regret from his voice, but it strengthened his convictions. I'm paraphrasing about what he said. In a nutshell, it reinforced his beliefs that he no longer wanted to live that kind of lifestyle.
