Thoughts on Intelligent Design: Unscientific vs Blasphemy

Here is an Inside Higher Ed article on intelligent design. It takes a different perspective on the creationism vs evolution argument. A national group letter campaign led by Michael Zimmerman, Dean for College of Letters and Sciences at the University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh aims to integrate science and faith.

The article states that the open letter written by Dr Zimmerman, an evolutionary biologist, is to confront anti-evolution groups and gain support for their cause. This is my interpretation. Their purpose is to show that no conflict arises from teaching their faith and the theory of evolution as a science. It is mentioned in the article on the importance of the clergy to support science.

The Clergy Letter Project --- has Christian leaders, theologians and teachers who work at religious institutions ---

"announced at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science that it would be joining with groups of scientists to back the Alliance for Science, which will oppose attempts to teach creationism and intelligent design, and will push for more federal spending on science and technology."

The article later quotes from the letter,

“We the undersigned, Christian clergy from many different traditions, believe that the timeless truths of the Bible and the discoveries of modern science may comfortably coexist,”

After reviewing the open letter campaign, I noticed the list contains theologians and clergy from various seminaries, churches, and other groups. From skimming the first couple pages, I noticed represented affiliations from Episcopal, Lutheran, and Methodist denominations.

Finally, interesting readings are the opinions/comments presented after the article. Particularly, read the comments between Andrew Purvis and James Ballard. Very heated perspectives! Although the article describes the effort as a reconciliatory note between the two distinctive schools of thought, the debate goes on....
