As I was riding on the Metro Red Line this morning from Gallery Place to Judiciary Square, I looked up at the window to see a Car commercial. For that instant, I thought I was undergoing some post-college hallucination. I totally forgot what car was promoted. Maybe, it was Chrysler. Or something corresponding to the same shape or make of car.
For a few seconds, I thought maybe the window was merely reflecting the train exterior or something similar, but I took a second glance. And, the moving pictures were still appearing through the window. Then, I guessed it was merely the side walls in the tunnel with different panels creating the special effects of a moving commercial. (At least, I hope it is.)
Totally wild, I thought, and an ever great relief to my ever so slight sanity.
Has anybody else seen this type of advertising on the metrorail before?
Since we're talking about the metrorail, has anyone seen that elderly Asian gentleman singing hymns on the metrorail? I haven't seen him for several months. Usually, I'm too preoccupied or too zoned out to observe.
One day sometime last year, I was heading out to meet friends for lunch at Dupont Circle. On the Red line in a semi-filled train and located in the middle of the train, a meek elderly gentleman pulled out a music sheet and started singing an old hymn.
I can't recall what he sang, but I do remember the reactions from the song performance. It isn't surprising to see someone sing on the metrorail or someone doing some type of street evangelism on the metro. It doesn't happen too often. And, when it does happen, it occasionally results in a judgmental/confrontational event.
What was surprising to me were the many people who just stopped talking and paused to hear the hymn. Most times, people will ignore the songs and continue with their reading, thoughts, or conversations.
This time, one guy even approached him and stood by to intently listen, and I saw a middle aged couple smile as they stared and listened to the singing. After the song ended, he put his music sheet away and politely said thank you. That same guy who was standing near him gave a genuine "thanks".
He then quickly departed from the train at the next stop.
Today's Scripture: 1 Corinthians 1:17 (New International Version)
17For Christ did not send me to baptize,
but to preach the gospel—not with words of human wisdom,
lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power.
