Well, I finally did it.
I didn't think that I would do it.
For the last couple weeks, I finally got around to "slugging" it to work, or as some would say, participating in a slug line. What do I mean by slugging? No, I am not talking about those gastropod mollusks without shells.
Some co-workers have been doing this type of commute for years. They even brag about it.
From the local area commuter travel web page, "Slug lines are unofficial meeting places where commuters catch free rides with drivers who need additional riders to use high occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes."
It is a very popular mode of travel when commuting.
It isn't so bad. Not at all. I have to get to the commuter location for pick up by 8:45 am.
It's an economical way to get to work and back. Not only cheap, but it is less stress. I don't have to drive into the city. Initially, I thought it was weird to travel in some stranger's car each day. Now, it is just second nature.
Since I usually work longer days after 6 pm on occasion, I take another mode of transportation from metrorail to get back home. After 6, most drivers will not take additional riders. So, I rarely see anybody in the slug line after that time. At least in the Pentagon area, that is how it is done. When I lived closer to the city proper, like Alexandria or Arlington, I could see commuters waiting for long periods of time after 6 pm.
After work I take the Omniride bus from Pentagon metrorail area to Woodbridge area stops, such as the local commuter parking lots or the local mall area.
Yeah, I'm a slug.
And, I'm a very comfortable slug.
