Start of a Metro- trend?

Last week I was browsing at online articles from the New York Times and skimmed an article talking about a fairly "new" concept, "metrospirituality", that has recently been getting the buzz in the online world. Obviously, there is an uphill swing for a "metro" trend to start. First, the word metrosexual, which is a totally dumb word anyway. Now, here what arrives as a new term, metrospirituality. Who comes up with this stuff? What's next? Okay, there is metroblogging, but that can be discussed in another post.

Anyway...

In the last couple years, I've heard friends talking about the word "metrosexual." Even before the term metrosexual was ever defined or in vogue, similar descriptions about the cultural phenomenon was called into existence, in the pre-millenium era, there was "being European" or "unisex" and, even before that, the word "dapper" was used to describe well dressed gentlemen.

Can we say "vain"? The psychological term for it is narcissism. It's a new label pasted on an old bottle.

For the word metrospiritual, there are already over 11,000 hits from google with this term. It appears that the word may have first appeared in Mid November of this year, after a belief.net article on this lifestyle was released. Besides that, metrospirituality appears that one believes in anything and everything but nothing at the same time. Maybe, I'm misintrepreting about what this concept is about. The article says,

Metrospirituality is the mainstreaming of Taoist, Buddhist . . ., and Hindu values, among others, into an easily digestible, buyable form.

There is also a quiz that was created to determine if you are a metrospiritual. I read the quiz and it seems much more concerned about materialism, than sprituality.

It's funny. After taking the quiz for the first time, I was told that ...

You are almost metrospiritual but you need a few more notches on the hipness meter before you can consider yourself a true metrospiritual. Your values are in line with metrospiritual thinking, but your lifestyle choices don't always match up. Either that, or you just can't afford a hybrid Lexus.

I don't try to be hip or consider myself as a metrospiritual. So what if I like buying organic food brands, that doesn't make me a metrospiritual, or does it?

Whatever thing is called into our culture as a new concept, fad, or style, it's good to know that God is the same today and the same tomorrow.

Today's verse: Exodus 35:31 (New American Standard Bible)

31"And He has filled him with the Spirit of God, in wisdom, in understanding and in knowledge and in all craftsmanship
