Here are a couple news items about current events in Nigeria. I've been keeping up with the news there, when I heard about the religious skirmishes. As a cursory observation, it appears that the conflicts are not only religious fights, but from different regions, like the North vs the South. It is indeed an intense situation, and it is amazing that an incident occurring in Denmark would trigger such a response so miles away.
A Lagos paper has released a brief on a Christian group response toward the killing of Christians in Nigeria. The Kaduna State chapter of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) warns people killing Christians that they will face the Wrath of God.
Truly, they should be aware of the wrath of God. Unfortunately, it almost sounds like their threat.
Another piece from a local Nigerian paper talks about a certain group urging the UN to investigate the religious killings of the Igbos peoples.
Why am I posting an entry in regards to Nigeria? The DC area is comprised of so many different types of people. It's definitely a diverse city. As for the many represented Africans, I've met many people from Ghana, Ethiopia, Kenya, Togo, South Africa, Somalia, Uganda and Zimbabwe, as well as Nigeria. Many come from different faiths and different denominations, with different dialects and traditions. The diversity in God's people is awesome.
I call them friends. Many of them have such great faith in God. And, can they pray?! Have you ever attended one of their prayer sessions. They can go on for hours in prayer! No joke.
The purpose for this type of entry is that we got to pray for all nations. People may think that other countries are part of an "evil empire", but it is usually not the case. From our past, we know that the US has not always stood up as the righteous nation.
Fellowshipping with African believers is quite humbling and enlightening at the same time. I don't know how to describe it. Like other believers from different countries, they show and have a different perspective about faith. They can be more intense about their faith.
After bringing up a serious international topic, I'll turn the discussion toward a local informational subject.
If you ever get an opportunity to do so, drive down or walk to your local African restaurant or ethnic market. If you are into spicy food and an adventurous diner, Adams Morgan and Arlington hosts a number of good Ethiopian and African restaurants, while a few Moroccan restaurants can be found in Alexandria and Silver Spring. Silver Spring hosts a couple West African restaurants as well.
Please note that all African cuisine is spicy. Some of it is quite mild.
More information can be found at the WaPO online site, Washingtonian magazine, Restaurant Row, etc. They usually have detailed listings, along with professional reviews and/or some user reviews, of local African cuisine for you to check out.
For I [know] their works and their thoughts: it shall come,
that I will gather all nations and tongues;
and they shall come,
and see my glory.
