Mr Furley wasn't a B-O-O-B.

I finally got around to read the news about Don Knott's death. It is quite sad to say good-bye to an old friend. It is funny to consider him a friend since I never have met him.

We grew up watching flicks and TV shows where he and other family friendly characters were common sights at our TV viewing. Funny, my family and I watched The Andy Griffith Show, where his Barney Fife character would bug out when a police emergency arose, and Three's Company, as the less-than-fashionable landlord eyeing Jack and the girls, as I was growing up.

One of our favorite household sayings to repeat, "just nip it in the bud". It was a classic Barney Five phrase.

I'm really dating myself here. Also, as a family, we would go to the local drive in theatres for Disney flicks, like the Apple Dumpling Gang, where he and another great comedian Tim Conway would portray bungling robbers.

Ah, those days of youth!

Last fall I saw a local paper ad promoting the annual Don Knotts Film Festival in West Virginia. I didn't realize that he had such a huge fan base. It would make sense because he was raised in WVA and a WVU graduate. As I read about his death, I found out that he majored in speech. Quite interesting to know that. I guess that's where he learned that comic timing.

How could you not laugh at his expressions? At age 81, he led a full life. Thanks for the laughs.

Maybe I'm dating myself as well, but, hey, no shame here! THAT was good TV, good entertainment. My family watched Andy Griffith as well. And, thinking back on that show, and others of the time, and Don Knotts, and hearing a couple of his lines from the show on the news, and laughing, it just reminded me how good, and CLEAN comedy and entertainment used to be. Very good comedy did not have to be crude, rude or lacivious back then. One wonders why it has to be now. Or, maybe one doesn't wonder, unfortunately.

I can't believe that I'm saying this, but they WERE the good ole' days! Entertainment is so much in your face nowadays.
