Movie Review: The Prestige

While I was in Charlottesville during the past weekend, I finally had an opportunity to watch director Christopher Nolan's The Prestige. I have wanted to see this movie since I watched another recent magician tale, The Illusionist with Roz, and I wanted to compare both movies.

Clearly, The Illusionist is an entertaining and interesting love story. Ed Norton's performance as Eisenheim the magician was quite good and Paul Giamatti in his support role as the lead law officer of the town was admirable also.

As for The Prestige, the premise is about two magicians who are obsessed in trying to outdo each other. Along the way, they lose relationships, encounter pains, emotional and physical, and may finally lose their lives. Without saying too much about the movie, the film ending reminds me of a Twilight Zone twist.

As for the acting, Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman as the competing mages were quite good. Also, I enjoyed the directing and writing.

After coming out of the theatre, I was going over the movie scenes in my head.

What is magic? Magic is illusion. It's deception. Can we take these thoughts to another step? Let's say magic can be viewed as a lie. Does magic equate lying? In one way, I would say yes.

With lying, its use is for hiding something or elevating someone. In the movie, these two magicians want to outdo one another in their parlor tricks.

What were the searching for? Prestige? The reputation as the best magician? In the end, the characters lost things very dear to them. In the end, they forgot why they performed magic in the first place.

Enough of this pondering. I hope you have a great Thanksgiving holiday!
