I read in today's local paper that the office of newly elected DC Mayor Adrian Fenty invited 120 homeless people from four area homeless shelters to view the movie, "Pursuit of Happyness". Yesterday's viewing was requested by a homeless activist.
The article cites that the owner of the Phoenix Theatre 9 Union Station agreed to offer a free showing of the movie and other sponsors supplied food. The mayor did not attend the event due to a scheduling conflict.
C'mon Mayor Fenty, it's a free movie and popcorn.
Seriously, I wonder how effective a movie showing will motivate or inspire people from homelessness. Some may consider this as an attempt for a quick fix or a publicity stunt or others may regard this action as a kind gesture.
Blogger Marc Fisher gives his Washington Post blog opinion about the topic. If you do read Marc Fisher's article, make certain you read the comments from blog readers. They give great suggestions for help.
I hope this will not be the last time for the DC office to assist with the homeless. Previously, I was not interested in seeing the movie. Now, I'll check it out next week.
Recording and sharing my experiences onscreen. Writing about the Washington DC metro area, Christianity, current events, travel, the local church scene, and my life adventures...And, yes, any tales, observations, & opinions may be included.
